San Mateo Wildlife Education: Does Poison Make Rodents Thirsty And Die Outside?

When it comes to dealing with rodents, most people want to have as little contact with the animals as possible. This means that instead of dealing with a trap of some sort, you may want to use poison to take care of the rodents. There are a lot of rodent poisons on the market, but it is a good idea to think about your actions before buying one.

The Myth Of Dying Outside
You may have heard that when you poison a rodent, it will get very thirsty and then go outside in search of water. This means that the rodent will die outside, making it incredibly easy to find the carcass and dispose of it. Unfortunately, this is a myth. There is never a guarantee that a poisoned rodent will die outside. Instead, it is actually more likely they will die in whatever corner of your home they live in. The idea that they die outside due to thirst is simply a rumor, and one that benefits pest control companies who rely on poison. So when you use poison, the rodents will die wherever they spend most of their time, like your attic or walls. You then have to find the rotting carcasses and remove them.

Poison Doesn’t Get All Rodents
In addition to the rumors about poison making rodents thirsty and causing them to die outside being false, there are other issues with poison. There is no guarantee that the poison is completely effective. Very rarely will all rats find it and even the rats that find it might not eat the poison. Even more importantly, not all rodents that eat poison die since some have a resistance.

It’s Inhumane
There are plenty of methods for removing rodents from your home and most of them are humane. Poisoning the rodents will not be. Instead of killing the animal instantly like a snap trap does, the poison does so in a slow and painful manner. Essentially, the rodents will be suffering for days on end. If you want to kill them, use a snap trap, which will do so instantly with almost no suffering.

The Problem Persists
If you are seriously considering using poison to take care of rodents and aren’t deterred by the issues finding their carcasses and the inhumanity, then consider what happens after the rats or mice are poisoned. If you miraculously kill all the rodents with poison and remove them, but do nothing else, you will have an issue. More rodents will simply enter your home by whatever method the ones you killed were using. Unless you find and seal their entrances, you will keep getting new rodents to replace the ones you kill.
